Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) Root Crowns
Fast privacy. Non-invasive. Kansas-proven.
Miscanthus × giganteus is a sterile hybrid grass that produces dense, upright growth reaching 10–12 feet at maturity. We grow and dig these in southeast Kansas, selecting only crown divisions with active growing points — not thin rhizome fragments.
This is one of the fastest ways to establish a living privacy screen without the invasiveness of bamboo or the long wait of trees. Read more: How to Build a Fast Privacy Screen Without Bamboo or Trees.
What It’s Used For
Most people plant Miscanthus for:
- Privacy screens — forms a solid visual barrier by year 2–3
- Windbreaks — reduces drying wind across gardens and orchards
- Biomass / cut-and-use — large annual growth for mulch or compost
It fills faster than trees and requires less long-term management than hedges.
Real Crowns vs. Thin Rhizomes
Not all rhizomes are equal. We ship true crown pieces with active growing points. Crown cuttings establish faster, produce stronger shoots, and reach usable height sooner.
Every piece we ship comes from plants that have already handled Midwest heat, wind, and variable rainfall.
Planting Basics
- Plant in spring once soil temps reach ~50°F
- Set crowns 2–4 inches deep, horizontally
- Keep growing tips near soil surface
- Space 18–24 inches apart for a solid screen
- Water in well and control weeds the first season
How Many Plants Do You Need?
Plan on spacing plants 18–24 inches apart.
- 20 ft screen → 10–13 plants
- 50 ft screen → 25–33 plants
- 100 ft screen → 50–67 plants
Quick guide:
- Small screen → 5-pack
- Medium screen → 10-pack
- Large screen → 25-pack
- Very Large Screen → 50-pack
Closer spacing fills in faster.
Growth timeline:
- Year 1: 3–5 ft
- Year 2: rapid vertical growth
- Year 3: full 10–12 ft screen
Closer spacing accelerates this timeline.
Kansas-Grown Advantage
These are field-grown and divided in southeast Kansas. That means they’re adapted to Midwest temperature swings, wind exposure, and variable rainfall — not greenhouse-raised or sourced from mild climates.
Giant Miscanthus Rhizomes (Root Crowns)
How many plants do I need for a privacy screen?
Plan one plant every 18–24 inches.
- 20 ft → 10–13 plants
- 50 ft → 25–33 plants
- 100 ft → 50–67 plants
Use the spacing guide in the product description to estimate how many plants you’ll need based on your screen length.
How fast does it grow?
- Year 1 focuses on root establishment (3–5 ft).
- Year 2 grows rapidly.
- Year 3 reaches full height in most conditions.
Does it spread or become invasive?
- No. It’s sterile and does not spread by seed.
- It expands slowly outward from the crown but stays where planted.
- Unlike bamboo, it will not take over.
When do you ship?
Spring and fall, when the weather allows.
Will it come back every year?
- Yes. It’s a perennial.
- Top growth dies back in winter and regrows in spring.
- Hardy to Zone 4.
Can I divide it later?
Yes. After 3–4 years, clumps can be divided in early spring.
