  • Persimmon Scionwood For Sale | Mad Cat Farm

Order Persimmon Scion Wood For Grafting The persimmon tree provides delicious, honey-sweet fruit at a time of the year when other fruit trees have nothing to offer. We grow two persimmon species: Diospyros Kaki (Asian Persimmon) and Diospyros Virginiana (American Persimmon), including hybrids of the two. Most kaki persimmons are not cold hardy enough to survive zone 6 winters, but we offer several which do, so you can experiment with them in your own orchard. The persimmon is the perfect fruit tree for permaculture and no spray organic growers, as they thrive with little care. All of our persimmon trees are grown at our zone 6 nursery in Kansas. Browse our collection of unique American and Asian persimmon varieties and order scion to graft your own persimmon trees. We recommend grafting onto American Persimmon seedling rootstocks. • T.V. Munson Grape Cuttings For Sale | Mad Cat Farm

Order T.V. Munson Grape Cuttings Mad Cat Farm maintains a collection of T.V. Munson grape varieties, which we believe are important for modern organic and "no-spray" growers wanting to produce backyard grapes without chemicals. Munson grapes were bred with the humid temperate regions of the United States in mind, namely the South and Midwest, which typically cannot grow grapes well. Thomas Volney Munson was a vitivculturalist, horticulturist and breeder of grapes in Texas in the late 1800s who developed some 300 varieties of grapes. Many of these varieties are no longer in existence or are no longer available to the public. We offer cuttings of many Munson grape varieties to help backyard growers start their own vines to produce table grapes and wine grapes. Cuttings are only available from winter through early spring. • Growing Elecampane from Root Cuttings: A Step-by-Step Guide | Mad Cat Farm

Growing Elecampane from Root Cuttings: A Guide Elecampane can be grown from root cuttings that have at least one "eye" or bud. After receiving your root cuttings, they should be planted immediately. They can also be kept in the refrigerator wrapped in damp paper towel, newspaper, sawdust or peat for 1-2 weeks. Never store them in the freezer. Each crown piece will grow into a new elecampane plant. Plant crowns in a location that receives full sun with moist, but well-drained soil. Place crown cuttings so that the buds point upward and cover in 1-2” of soil. Mulch the planting site with straw, wood chips, a thin layer of grass clippings, etc. Keep watered and weed free until the plant is well established. After a year, you can begin harvesting elecampane roots for medicinal use or further propagation. You can order elecampane root cuttings from our nursery here .

  • Kansas Apple Exploration Project | Mad Cat Farm

Kansas Apple Exploration Apples are so iconic in the world of fruit and history that it's hard to imagine not growing them. But most apples are clones of trees from times long past. By grafting these trees, we propagate a being that once grew in a climate and place much different from ours today. This makes for a challenging existence for both the apple and the gardener. That is why we decided to begin a major apple exploration project: to find the most suitable cultivars for our region and to eventually begin seedling trials using seed from the best specimens found. In 2021 and 2022 we grafted over 130 apple varieties. Our goal was to find apples which could be grown organically, using "no spray" methods. A primary concern in this region is fire blight, a disease which can kill susceptible apple trees. Because of this, the most fire blight resistant apple varieties were selected. We are in the early stages of this project, and so far we have have grown the grafted apple trees in our nursery beds for one year. This spring we began planting trees into the field, where we will evaluate their performance. A desire for hardy, low maintenance trees lead us to experiment with two apple rootstocks for this project: M111 (Malling-Merton 111) and Antanovka, a standard sized seedling roostock. As the project matures, we will begin controlled pollination and seed collection. Seed will be grown out and seedlings will be further selected for vigor, absence of disease and overall vitality. Scionwood will be available from our experimental orchard as trees grow in size. Visit The Apple Scionwood Page
