Mespilus germanica
Medlars are small, deciduous trees that produce unique, edible fruits. They are native to Europe and western Asia and have been cultivated for centuries.
Key Characteristics:
Unique Fruits: Medlar fruits are small, pear-shaped, and have a rough, brown skin. They become edible only after they have softened and developed a mealy texture, a process known as "bletting." The fruits have a tart, astringent flavor when fresh, but they become sweeter and more mellow after bletting.
Ornamental Value: Medlar trees have attractive foliage and white flowers, making them suitable for ornamental landscapes.
To germinate, soak the seeds in hot water for 24 hours, cold stratify for 365 days, then warm stratify for 9 months, then cold stratify for another 120 days before sowing barely 1/16" deep.
