Chinese Mountain Yam (Dioscorea batatas), also called cinnamon vine or hardy air potato, is a vigorous perennial vine that produces edible underground tubers and small aerial bulbils. These bulbils drop in autumn and can be replanted each spring, making them a renewable propagation source. Unlike tropical air potatoes, this cold-hardy species thrives in temperate climates down to about USDA Zone 5.
Each order includes 15 fresh bulbils, mixed small to medium sizes.
Plant bulbils 1–2 inches deep in well-drained soil. Provide a trellis, fence, or arbor for climbing. Full sun to part shade is ideal. Water regularly during the growing season. In fall, the vine dies back; harvest bulbils for storage or replanting.
Bulbils are primarily for propagation. The underground yam is the part traditionally eaten. In cold regions, bulbils can be stored indoors and replanted in spring. Please check local regulations before planting.
